World Breakfast All Day invites everyone to “get acquainted with foreign culture through breakfast.” The concept is a monthly rotating menu of popular national breakfasts from around the world. I like the idea and the way they translated the concept into the store design – there’s a very cozy, communal feel to the place.
In some ways that’s a happy side effect of the space constraints, because there’s barely enough room for a single long table that seats 6 on each side and a small open kitchen tucked at the back. In any other place this might feel a bit tight, but it works well here because it gives patrons (a good mix of locals and foreigners) the opportunity to interact with each other over a hearty meal.
We ordered the breakfast of the month, which was Russian, and the English breakfast from their standard menu (presumably for the less adventurous). We’ve never tried a Russian breakfast before, so we were looking forward to trying it out. The waitress who took our order mentioned that every guest is required to order a drink with their meal, so that’s something you might want to keep in mind.
So how’s the food? We’re happy to report that it’s good – fresh, flavourful and fantastically presented. The Russian breakfast came with a beet salad, marinated mushrooms, salmon crepe, kasha (buckwheat cereal and hot milk) and two small meat patties.
The English breakfast is what you’d expect – crispy toast, baked beans and mushrooms, scrambled eggs, grilled tomato, hash brown and pork sausage. It was a nice contrast to the Russian one, which was a lot lighter.
I got a hot milk tea to go with my English breakfast, while Shiori tried the sbiten, a hot Russian drink made with honey, juice and spice. It was nice, although we found it a bit too sweet for our liking.
Best thing about this place is that for non-morning people like me, they serve breakfast for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So you can sleep in and pop in whenever you’re fully conscious. The place is popular, and with the limited seating, there’s usually a line, especially on weekends. So be prepared to wait a little.
World Breakfast All Day is a bit pricey, but worth at least a try. It’s a great dining option if you happen to be in the Omotesando area. If breakfasty food isn’t your thing, there’s always The Third Burger.
