I love chicken. It’s cheap, healthy and delicious. There are a few izakaya chains that specialize in chicken, but one of my favorites is Toriyoshi.
Their chicken wings are just awesome. It’s like they’re marinated in dope or something – once you start eating these chicken wings you can’t stop! But stop you will, to eat all the other yummy stuff they have on the menu.
Stuff like the fresh tofu – which is a revelation if you’ve only ever eaten that regular supermarket stuff. This fresh little white ball is bursting with flavor, and is something I always order when I come here.
The juicy chicken nanban is really good too, and is bound to disappear sooner rather than later. They also serve chicken ramen, vegetable nabes (hot pots) and other rice dishes if you still have space left.
As with all izakaya, there’s a small table charge per person of about 300 Yen, but you get a really tasty appetizer for it. I can’t put a finger on what it is, but it tastes like creamy mashed potatoes.
They have branches all across Tokyo and Japan, and they’re usually packed on evenings and weekends. We usually go to the one in Shibuya, but we visited the branch in Harajuku recently and to our surprise there was no line! We breezed right in, which is really rare. So if you want to try Toriyoshi, we recommend heading to the Harajuku branch. It’s more spacious and the interior is a class above the one in Shibuya.
“For those with a taste for spicy stuff, order the chicken wings extra hot for an extra good time. Those things are addictive! Order at least 6 pieces per person, or better yet 10. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.”
