Enoshima Aquarium – Life’s Better Under The Sea

Enoshima Aquarium, just 10 minutes from the Katase Enoshima station on foot, is one of the area’s biggest attractions, besides the actual Enoshima island itself. It’s one of the must-visit places if you’re in the area. Tickets start from 2,100 Yen for adults to as low as 600 Yen for kids aged 3 and older.

The aquarium has a great mix of attractions – there’s something for everyone in the family. As you enter the main hall you’ll see an absolutely gigantic tank filled with local marine life from Sagami Bay, including sharks and stingrays.

Walk in further and you’ll come across sections dedicated to penguins, jellyfish and bizarre deep sea creatures. For us, the latter is by far the most interesting. Here you can catch a rare look at some of the creepiest alien-looking creatures that live deep under the sea – so deep that not even light reaches. We couldn’t stop staring!

Next to that is the jellyfish exhibit, which happens to be one of the most popular – seeing hundreds of them gently bobbing up and down in their tanks is quite a sight! Don’t miss the beautiful 3D projection mapping show that runs every 30 minutes or so.

If you’re there on a weekend or public holiday, be sure to check out the dolphin show at the Dolferia outdoor theater! Watch a team of super smart and cute dolphins perform incredible gymnastics in the giant pool with their humans, with a beer in hand and the beach and Mt Fuji as a backdrop. Doesn’t get any better than this.

All in all, Enoshima Aquarium is a fun, cheap and educational way to spend half a day in the Enoshima-Kamakura area. When you’re done, head across the street to J.S. Foodies for some awesome lobster rolls, burgers and savory pancakes.
